Scott Huntsman is the new senior executive director of sales at Muncie Power Products. With more than 20 years of experience within the industry, Scott brings a vast skillset and natural ability to the role. It may be surprising then to know that growing up and even into his early twenties, Scott didn’t initially see himself with a career in sales.

“When I was growing up, I always enjoyed working with my hands and thought about becoming something like an electrician or mechanic,” he said. “I was the kid who liked to take the lawn mower apart and put it back together.”

It wasn’t until Scott was out of college and working within his third position that he was exposed to the sales field.

“I discovered that I wanted to be in sales when I was working as an applications engineer and started traveling with the sales team,” Scott explained. “It was then I realized how enjoyable I found sales.”

The rest, as they say, is history. And while his positions may have changed over the years, the motivating factor behind why Scott continues to pursue a career in sales has not.

“It’s constantly changing and every day is different,” said Scott. “In sales, you get to work with all of the functional areas of your company and those of your customers.”

Working regularly with all of the areas of a company and its customers, is ultimately the basis to fostering professional relationships. Building relationships is not only one of Scott's favorite parts about sales, but also key to its success.

As Scott said, “People buy from people. This hasn’t changed, and I don’t think it ever will.”

It was calling on distributors early on his sales career that he discovered that those companies who focused on the experience their people brought to the table, as opposed to product price, were more effective in serving their customers and achieving sustained growth. This insight would ultimately become instrumental in shaping the sales philosophy he holds to this day.

“As much as we may not want to admit it, our competitor can always copy our product and processes,” he said regarding his philosophy. “What is incredibly hard to replicate however is the overall customer sales experience, which is all about the quality of your team.”

Today in his new role, Scott is head of the sales, marketing and advertising, and customer service departments; in addition to the technology solutions group. He looks forward to continue building upon the collaborative culture between these departments to ensure a cohesive front-end of Muncie Power’s business.

“The people at Muncie Power are incredibly open and have been very supportive,” he said. “Everyone has bent over backwards to help me get acquainted. I look forward to working with all of them as we have a growing breadth of exciting products to take to our customers in 2016."
